This week when I was practicing listening, I heard a text from an American student textbook, which really touched me. The content is as follows:
When to say no
1. Although "no" is a very simple word, it is not always easy to say it; not saying it often leads to trouble.
2. If someone asks us to skip school, live idlely, or use the time that should be spent studying to be naughty, we should say "no" immediately.
3. When someone encourages us to waste time on the way to school, thereby being late, interrupting the teacher's class or school activities, we should say "no". When some students want us to whisper or play in the classroom, we should say "no".
4. When we are tempted to use angry or evil words, we should remember that God’s eyes are always upon us and we should say “no.”
5. When we do something wrong and want to cover it up with lies, we should say "No, we can't lie, that is evil and cowardly behavior."
6. If someone asks us to do anything that we know is wrong, we should have the courage to say "no".
7. If we learn to say "no" to this, we will avoid a lot of trouble and enjoy peace for a long time.
Although this text only has 7 short sentences, it conveys an important life principle to children: when facing mistakes and temptations, they must be brave enough to say "no". This is not an easy thing, not only for children, but for us adults as well.
This American textbook not only teaches children vocabulary and grammar, but more importantly, it guides children to learn to distinguish right from wrong, and gradually establish correct values and belief in gods.
The ability to distinguish right from wrong is an integral part of each of us' growth. Through the right education, children learn to distinguish between right and wrong behaviors in daily life, and understand which actions are right and which may lead to adverse consequences. Developing this ability will provide children with a solid foundation that enables them to make informed decisions when faced with problems.
It is also important for children to establish correct values. This involves not only knowing what is right and wrong, but also respect for others, honesty, responsibility, compassion, and more. Children with the right values interact with the world around them in a healthier, positive way.
The third and most important one is belief in gods. Faith is an indestructible spiritual pillar for children when they face temptations and challenges in life. Under the guidance of faith, children can not only learn to reject temptations that may cause them to lose their way, but also gain inner strength and courage, allowing them to walk firmly on the right path in their life journey.
My uncle often said that the true meaning of education is not only to enable children to master necessary knowledge and skills, but more importantly, to guide children to become moral, religious and responsible people. Only in this way can children make the right choices no matter what challenges and temptations they face in their future lives, and become pillars of society who can both assume family responsibilities and contribute to society.
