安士全书中有这样一则故事：从前华氏国有一头白象，能消灭怨敌，若有人犯罪，其国刑法就是用象踏死此人。后来象厩被火烧毁，即把象移到一座寺院附近。象听闻比丘念诵“法句经”，至“为善升天，为恶入渊”这一句，忽然感到恐惧，站立不动，似乎有所觉悟。后来把罪人推到象前，象只用鼻嗅舌舐，不忍心踏杀。国王知其缘故之后，就把象移到屠宰之所，象每天见闻屠杀，恶心又变得凶猛炽盛。
白象在慈悲善良的环境里，性情变得温和，不忍再踏杀生命。而在血腥的屠宰场，又变得暴虐残忍。同样，如果我们选择亲近君子，与道德高尚的人为伍，那么我们的心灵也会得到滋养和提升。相反，如果我们沉迷于低俗的环境，与小人交往，那么我们也会逐渐失去自己的原则和底线。人从好变坏很容易，但要想改恶从善却很难。古时候孟母三迁，为的就是让孟子能有一个良好的学习环境。可见环境对我们的影响极为重大，岂能不重视？我们应该时刻保持警惕，选择正确的道路，千万远离那些可能对我们产生负面影响的环境和人。

It is easy for people to change from good to bad, but it is difficult to change from evil to good.
